A Toronto Photographer’s Guide to Dressing for Your Maternity and Family Session
Hey there friends!
Are you getting excited for your upcoming photoshoot? I know I am! One of the most important aspects of preparing for your session is deciding what to wear. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
Color Palette
First things first, let’s talk color. Wearing coordinating colors is key for creating a cohesive and polished look in your photos. Avoid wearing all black or all white, as it can be too stark in photos and wash out your skin tone. I would really recommend you to dress for a Pastel tone , or Earth tone.
So what is Pastel tone? Pastel tones are pale, soft colors that are often associated with spring and summer. They are created by adding white to a color, which makes it lighter and less intense. Pastel colors include pale pink, mint green, baby blue, lavender, light yellow and many more. These colors are often used in fashion, interior design, and art to create a soft, delicate, and soothing effect. Pastel tones are also commonly associated with a vintage, retro or a feminine style.
Why pastel tone is my recommendation for you? Some of these reasons include:
- Soft, delicate and soothing effect: Pastel tones have a soft and delicate appearance that can create a soothing and peaceful atmosphere in photographs. This can be especially useful in family and maternity photography, where the focus is on the beauty and tenderness of the moment.
- Compliments the environment: Pastel tones can be chosen to complement the natural environment, such as in a spring or summer outdoor photoshoot. It can create a cohesive look with the surrounding landscape.
- Creates a vintage or retro look: Pastel tones can be used to create a vintage or retro look, which can be a fun and unique style for clients who are looking for something different.
- Enhancing the skin tones: Pastel tones can also be chosen to enhance the skin tones of the clients, making them look soft, fresh and youthful in photographs.
- Reflecting a feminine style: Pastel tones can reflect a feminine style, which can be perfect for clients who want to showcase their soft and delicate side.
Ultimately, the choice of pastel tones should depend on the client’s preferences and the overall style and theme of the photoshoot.
Another color pallet that I personally love and would be pleasing to the eyes are earth tone
Pattern
When it comes to styling your family for a photoshoot, it’s important to keep in mind that we want the photos to be timeless. That’s why I suggest avoiding bold patterns and clothing with logos or words. Investing in your wardrobe is just as important as investing in the photoshoot itself.
Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when styling your family:
FAQ
Q: Can I wear black in maternity or family photos?
A: Yes, black can be a great option for maternity and family photos, as it is slimming and timeless. Just be sure to mix in other colors to break up the black and keep the focus on you and your family.
Q: What type of footwear should I wear in my photo session?
A: The type of footwear you wear will depend on the location and the season of your photo session. For example, if you’re at the beach, sandals are a great choice. If it’s a more formal setting, heels or dress shoes may be more appropriate.
